Wood deck treatment can be split into two disctinct areas.

1. Initial Wood Deck Treatment

Preservation of decking timber - By impregnating the timber under pressure with a lifetime wood treatment product, such as Tanalith-E.

These lifetime wood treatment products will indeed prolong the natural life of your decking - with one proviso. If you break down the outer layers of the timber deep enough to allow fungal and insect attack into the heart or sapwood (where the presevative has not penetrated), your timber will begin to decay. It is therefore necessary to repair any such damage and treat immediately using some other chemical preservative, such as Ensele. This will discourage any further fungal or insect attack.

2. Ongoing Wood Deck Treatment

Once you have built your deck the best advice is simply to keep it clean. This is the easiest way to reduce maintenance costs and look after your investment.

Regardless of how dirty your decking installations may become, always use a cleaning solution before pressure washing. Begin by scrubbing your deck using a solution of domestic washing powder to remove surface dirt. DO NOT USE BLEACH. Whichever wood deck treatment you choose to clean your deck, and there are literally hundreds of deck cleaners on the market, make sure you follow the instructons carefully.

The upkeep of your deck should not prove to be too much of a chore if you clean regularly and apply the required wood deck treatment. Please note the emphasis is on REGULARLY.
